What is MIPS helmet technology?
MIPS (Multi-Directional Impact Protection System) is an additional brain protection system.
The MIPS system was invented in 1996 in Sweden by Hans von Holst, a neurosurgeon and Peter Halldin, a researcher from the Royal Institute of Technology.
MIPS is designed to add protection against rotational motion (or kinematics) transmitted to the brain from angled impacts to the head, which is how most riders fall.
Rotational motion is a combination of rotational energy (angular velocity) and rotational forces from angular acceleration that both affect the brain and increase the risk for minor and severe brain injuries.
MIPS’ added protection system has been proven to reduce rotational motion when implemented in a helmet by redirecting energies and forces otherwise transmitted to the brain.
How does MIPS work?
MIPS is an additional liner that is incorporated inside the riding helmet.
This low-friction layer enables your head to move 10-15mm in all directions, which has been proven to reduce the rotational movement to the brain and therefore injury (particularly concussion and traumatic brain injury).
The core idea behind MIPS is to simulate and enhance the brain’s own protection system, which uses the same principle of the brain being able to slide a little bit against the skull.

Runs large
a really nice helmet in terms of quality and style, but I think it runs large. My head measures 56 cm, which should be a medium according to the size chart, but with the dial thingy adjusted properly the top of the helmet still contacted the top of my head.

Beautiful helmet but shape is NOT for everyone.
Pre-ordered the matte blue color and received it about 2 weeks ago. I wanted to LOVE it. I was so excited to get it in the mail. It was exactly what I have been wanting in terms of aesthetic design and at a quarter of the price. Maybe it is the wrong design for my head shape and facial structure but this helmet looks nothing like the photos as it did on me. In my opinion, it is extremely unflattering - I look like I am a teenage boy and/or am wearing a top hat or a small kitchen bowl that sits right on top of my head. If you have a small head and a relatively heart shaped face, I recommend you spare yourself the disappointment. Helmet is beautiful out of the box and I have seen pictures of friends wearing theirs and it looks fantastic but I do not think it is a universally attractive helmet for all facial shapes. For comparison, it fit very much like the trauma void matte helmets (still better than this fit but similar).

GREAT FOR OVAL HEADS TOO!!
I am in love. DO NOT BE SCARED OF THE "ROUND FIT"!
I spoke with a CO customer assistant on the phone while helmet shopping and she suggested this helmet because it was in my price point and MIPS.
I apparently have a very oval shaped head and CO is the first brand of helmet to ever truly fit me so I decided to give it a shot despite it saying "round fit".
I was fearing a troxel style round where the front and back of the helmet squeeze and leave a red mark on your forehead.
BUT FEAR NOT MY OVAL HEADED FRIENDS!
This helmet fits VERY well. It does not fit me as perfectly as my old CO Pro II did (that would be a high order to fill). But it is extremely comfortable, and leaves me with no headaches nor red forehead marks from pressure points.
Its fit and comfort far exceed the ovation MIPS option that smart pack carries which I tried as well (the one that's a similar price point).
I measure at a 57cm, and a medium is snug enough to raise my eyebrows with the "wiggle test" before even tightening the dial in the back.
Such a great affordable MIPS option.

Great new MIPS option!
Yay, finally another great MIPS option. First-don’t be scared by the “round fit” note. I have a more oval head and this is the best fitting MIPS helmet I’ve tried yet. True to size and the dial fit really helps secure the fit. This feels significantly lighter weight than my Tipperary MIPS helmets and the airflow is decent. Smartpak, please carry the wide brim and glossy options!
